Starting a new thread as these issues need discussing beyond the Bristol Flyers game. If we agree some thought-out improvements we could send them to the club collectively rather than individually bombarding the poor person running their Twitter feed.
Clock
Problems with the game clock or shot clock are happening all too often. It should be set up before fans enter the arena so if there's any problems there's time to fix it. If for some reason people can't be on site that early there should be a backup system. I also don't understand why the crew give up once the match starts - can't they keep working on it (with the display covered up) or do so at half time? The organisers know they've got a problem, they must be better prepared for the next game.
Allocated seating
If it's unreserved seating, this should be made clear before fans enter the arena, to save confusion and aggravation in the stands.
Stewards must be briefed before the game that even if it's been assigned an unreserved seating game, this does not apply in the season ticket block. If season ticket holders are bringing guests, the season ticket holder should be given a new seat for the night if they don't have free seats next to them and they want to sit with their guests. This was previously confirmed to me by Harry Day over email and seems perfectly fair.
Music
This should not be used as a soundtrack to the whole game. It's fine for breaks in play and pre- and post-match. I can even stretch to a small number of songs during play but these should be specially chosen for the mood, not just the next hip hop track on the playlist, and only when the atmosphere calls for it. If fans are already creating noise, music simply drowns it out for no good reason.
The DJ must familiarise himself with the desk. We don't need to hear the blip-blip-blip of the sound being turned up on his Mac - that's what all the volume knobs on the desk are for! Work out what level the volume needs to be at so the crowd can hear it fine without being deafened and stick to it.
If the DJ is in charge of the cheerleaders' music, he should have this ready to go as soon as they're called into action. There isn't time for faffing around unplugging mp3 players and adjusting the sound levels.
Announcer
His job is to add some colour and humour, annotate the game by keeping us abreast of the stats and foul counts, and to explain unclear decisions. This helps keep fans, especially new fans, engaged in the action without becoming lost. I think the number of fans in the arena who understand the whole game perfectly without him are few, so tailor the explanations for the majority.
It's not a radio commentary, he doesn't need to describe every single play. At the Bristol Flyers game it was very stilted as he'd start talking before he knew what decision had been given or which player it was. If you don't know, say nothing!
He shouldn't be a neutral commentator - he's the home team announcer so should be partisan (within the fairness of the rules).
When you tell the fans to make some noise, stop talking and let them do so!
He needs to learn the players' names and pronunciations and even the teams' names; 'the yellows' and 'the blues' - it's not an under-10s football match.
Compère
I'm not sure what the point of a compère separate to the announcer is. Last season the role was combined perfectly fine. It seems a waste of money to me.
Entertainment/Games
It's nice they're trying to do this for the kids but think it through. Two kids trying to run the length of the court in a giant shirt and trying to shoot into a full-height basket, with 30 seconds before the real action needs to resume? Oh and what happened to the other competition they trailed of an adult attempting a long shot? The 3v3 at half time was good though.
Stingy reducing the raffle to one prize - is the rest going on the compère's fee?!
Lionesses
It's just a shame they've been replaced because the old team seemed to be settled in the roles and now the new team have to learn it all over again. The original team had a really good presence at the match and added that touch of professionalism usually missing in the BBL. I appreciate it's early days but the new team has a lot of work in store.
